Worcester State Knocks Off Fitchburg State, 2-0
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State College women’s soccer team got a pair of goals from sophomore Amanda Santos (Milford, MA) as the squad remained undefeated in MASCAC action defeating the visiting Falcons of Fitchburg State by the final score of, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Worcester State’s Coughlin Field. Worcester State, currently ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA New England poll, improves to 9-2 (2-0 MASCAC) on the season, while Fitchburg State falls to 6-2 (1-1 MASCAC).
Santos opened the scoring at the 30 minute mark when she converted a pass from Worcester State’s points leader, junior Lauren Cush (Hudson, MA) to give the Lancers a 1-0 edge in the rematch from last season’s MASCAC Tournament semifinal game. The teams took that score into the break as the game proved to be a defensive battle with each team mustering just 2 shots in the first stanza.
Santos gave Worcester State some breathing room in the 71st minute as she gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead when she scored her 6th goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Amanda Beaudet (Auburn, MA).
Worcester State netminder Kim Massa (Westford, MA) inched even closer to a pair or Worcester State records with the shutout. The scoreless game was her 9th of the season; just one shy of the Worcester State record which she already owns a share of as she posted 10 shutouts her sophomore season. She is now also two shutouts short of the Worcester State career record of 31 held by former standout Kate O’Connor. Massa made 3 saves on the day for Worcester State.
Fitchburg State keeper, Kyla Batchelder (Stoughton, MA) made a pair of saves for the Falcons in taking her first loss of the year.
Worcester State will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Keene State. Fitchburg State will travel to Anna Maria on Tuesday afternoon for their next contest.
