Women's Soccer Advances Past #18 Stevens Tech in NCAA’s, 2-0

Schenectady, NY - The Worcester State College women’s soccer team upset the 18th ranked Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon in a NCAA 1st Round regional contest hosted by Union College by the final score of, 2-0.  The Lancers, who have earned the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference’s automatic qualifying bid each of the last three seasons, will advance to the 2nd round for the first time.  Worcester State will take on Endicott College who defeated the host Dutchmen of Union 3-2 this afternoon.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half with the Lancers carrying much of the action through the first 15 minutes of action before Stevens evened out the momentum for the rest of the half.

In the second half, Stevens Institute had the first opportunity to get on the board as just 45 seconds into the half the Ducks had a break away that Lancer goalkeeper Kim Massa (Westford, MA) got a piece of but the momentum of the ball still carried it towards the goal line before freshman Keri Burden (Bridgewater, MA) cleared the ball out just as it was nearing the goal line.

Worcester State got the game-winner in the 59th minute when 1st team All-MASCAC forward Katelyn Bonetti (Plymouth, MA) took a pass from MASCAC Player of the Year Lauren Cush (Hudson, MA) and raced through several defenders before shooting a shot over the Stevens keeper’s head to give Worcester State a, 1-0 lead.

Amanda Beaudet (Auburn, MA) got the Lancers an insurance goal in the 80th minute potting her 4th goal of the season into the left corner of the net.

Massa made 6 saves on the day to earn her 13th shutout of the year and 33rd of her career.
