SOMERVILLE – Junior Jessie Wagner (Sudbury, MA) scored two minutes into the second overtime to give the Tufts women’s soccer team a 1-0 non-conference victory against Worcester State College on Wednesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

Played under remarkably windy conditions, the match seem destined to be a 0-0 draw until Wagner beautifully placed a shot from outside the top of box into the far right corner of the net. The golden goal was the first of her Tufts career for Wagner, who scored four times as a freshman at Bates College in 2004. The win was the eighth in nine games for the Jumbos (8-3-2). The Lancers, playing their regular-season finale, dropped to 13-5-1 overall.

Tufts dominated play and would have been disappointed with a 0-0 draw.  The final tallies had the Jumbos earning a 28-4 margin in shots and a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. In the first half, their best opportunities came on shots over the crossbar by freshman Sara Raley (Centennial, CO) and junior Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA). The Lancers did not have a shot in the first half.

Lancer keeper Kim Massa (Westford, MA) blocked a point-blank blast by Tufts sophomore Rebecca Abbott (New Orleans, LA) with 30 minutes on the clock in the second half. Worcester’s best opportunity of the game came four minutes later on a direct kick by senior co-captain Melissa Colwell (Spencer, MA) that was saved by Tufts keeper Annie Ross (Newton, MA).

In the first overtime, Massa made another quality save on an open shot by Furtek. Worcester picked up its play a bit in the extra periods, but Tufts was able to finish with a victory when Wagner calmly set up her shot and let it rip for the winner with 7:37 on the clock in the second OT.

Massa finished with six saves for Worcester. Ross made two saves helping Tufts pick up its sixth shutout and second in a row. Furtek finished the match with 10 shots for Tufts. However, only seven of the team’s 28 total shots landed on goal.
