Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College women’s soccer team, needing a victory to get into the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference postseason tournament, defeated the Owls of Westfield State College by the score of 2-0 Saturday evening at John Coughlin Memorial Field on the campus of Worcester State College.

The Lancers opened up the scoring on a tremendous shot from 30 yards out by freshman Tonya MacKenzie (Swansea, MA) that found the top, right corner of the Westfield net in the 32nd minute of action. Worcester took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

In the 62nd minute the Lancers gave themselves some breathing room when sophomore Caroline Goulet (Framingham, MA) beat the Owl keeper from point blank range to give the Lancers the 2-0 victory.

Freshman keeper Kim Massa (Westford, MA) earned the shutout for the Lancers stopping 5 shots on the night.

With the win the Lancers advance to the semifinals of the MASCAC Tournament where they will take on the Bears of Bridgewater State on Wednesday. The Lancers lost to the Bears a week ago by the score of 1-0.

Worcester finishes the regular season with a 7-8-1 record, while Westfield concludes their 2003 campaign at 7-6-3.
