Worcester State Gets Past Westfield State, 66-59

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College women’s basketball team got a 20 point effort from senior Lindsay DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA) and 17 from junior Natasha Dallas (Roxbury, MA) as the Lancers overcame an early 8 point deficit to knock off the visiting Owls of Westfield State in MASCAC action Saturday afternoon at Lancer Gymnasium.  The first conference win of the year resets the Lancers at 1-1 in the MASCAC and 3-10 overall, while Westfield State falls to 5-9 and 0-2 in the MASCAC.

The teams battled to a, 26-26, halftime score as Worcester State spent the majority of the first frame trailing.  The Lancers, who shot 33.3% from the field, were paced by DelleChiaie who went for 14 first half points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field including three treys.  Dallas chipped in with 5 points.  Westfield State was led by junior Katie Sylvain (Hadley, MA) who scored 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor including a pair from beyond the arc.  The Owls shot just slightly better from the floor than the Lancers at 35.7%.

In the second half, the teams were tied at, 33-33, before a three pointer by senior Maureen Lemay (Nashua, NH) untied the game for the final time as the Lancers went on am 11-0 run to separate from the Owls.  The lead hovered around the 10 point mark until the 2:27 mark when Westfield made their final push.  Westfield was able to narrow the gap to 4 points with just a minute remaining on a jumper by Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, MA) but Worcester State hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve the 6 point victory.

DelleChiaie and Dallas paced the Lancers offensively along with Lemay who had a 9 point, 7 rebound game.  Westfield State was led by Katie Sylvain with 20 points followed by Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) with 15 points and Betty Dely (Waltham, MA) with 10 points.

Worcester State returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Framingham State to take on the Rams.  Westfield State will play host to Salem State Tuesday evening.
