February 3, 2007 Lancer Women Ease Past Westfield State, 65-50 Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College women’s basketball team got back in the thick of the MASCAC playoff race Saturday afternoon defeating the visiting Owls of Westfield State by the final score of, 65-50, in Lancer Gymnasium avenging a loss earlier in the season to the visitors. The win improves the Lancer record to 11-9 (4-4 MASCAC), while Westfield falls to 8-12 (3-5 MASCAC). The Lancers scored the first 8 points of the game and led by as many as 16 in the half before taking a 15 point advantage, 35-20, into the break. Worcester State got a strong first half effort from junior Maureen Lemay (Nashua, NH) who scored 11 points and hauled down 7 rebounds in the first half of action. Freshman Bri Flanders (Southampton, MA) added 9 points and 4 rebounds for the hosts. Worcester State dominated the paint out rebounding the Owls 25-14 in the half and scoring 24 of their 35 points in the paint. Westfield State was led in the first half by sophomore Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) who scored 9 points. In the second half, Worcester State opened with an 11-2 run over the first 6:16 of the half as Westfield State continued their struggles from the field. The, 46-22, lead would be the biggest of the game for the Lancers. The lead would hover around 20 points for much of the half before Westfield State closed with an 11-5 run over the last 2:55 to set the final score. Flanders and senior Rachael Odugbela (Providence, RI) would pace Worcester State with 13 points each. Lemay finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Wasuk finished with a game-high 17 points for Westfield State as she was the only Owl to reach double figures. Worcester State will travel to Framingham State on Tuesday evening. Westfield State will host Salem State on Tuesday night as well. ##### |
