FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State freshman guard Krystle O’Brien (Malden, MA/Malden) dropped in a game-high 24 points and handed out five assists in a 68-50 Falcon victory over visiting Worcester State Tuesday night in MASCAC women’s basketball action.

O’Brien was 8-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from three-point land to rally FSC to its 17th straight victory. O’Brien also had four steals for the Falcons (17-1; 7-0 MASCAC), who also received strong help from graduate student Jen Fontaine (Dracut, MA/Dracut) and senior guard D’yana Delpero (Peabody, MA/Peabody). Fontaine scored 15 points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists and came away with six steals while Delpero had five rebounds (3 offensive) and three steals.

The Lancers fell to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the MASCAC despite senior guard Rachael Odugbela (Providence, RI/St. Andrew’s School), who netted a team-high 19 points with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. Junior guard Lindsay DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/Leominster) was the only other WSC player to reach double digits, scoring 13 points.

The host Falcons, who never trailed in the game, led just 36-29 at intermission and Worcester cut the lead to five points on two separate occasions (45-40 with 12:00 minutes remaining and 47-42 with 11:44 to play). But the Green and Gold went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to close out the game.

Worcester owned a 40-30 edge on the glass, but Fitchburg limited the guests to just 33 percent shooting from the field and forced 35 Lancer turnovers (FSC committed 19 turnovers and shot 39 percent).

The Lancers will look to get back on track Saturday when they host Westfield while Fitchburg will travel to Salem State that same day.
