Worcester State Drops Game To RIC, 54-45 For Immediate Release: 2/5/04 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730
Worcester, MA - In non-conference action Thursday night, the Worcester State College women’s basketball team lost to the visiting Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College by the final score of, 54-45, in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College.The Lancers took an early 6-0 lead in the first 3 minutes of action, but went scoreless for the next 4 minutes and the Anchorwomen grabbed a 7-6 lead and would never trail again. Over an 11 minute stretch RIC went on a 20-4 run to lead 19-10 with 6 minutes left in the first half. Worcester State closed well and scored the final 6 points of the half and trailed 24-20 at the break. RIC was led by Caitlin Ryan (Chepachet, RI) with 7 points, while Brittany Rheault (Oxford, MA) had 6 for the Lancers. The Anchorwomen extended their lead to eleven midway through the second half leading, 40-29, before a 13-3 WSC run narrowed the gap to one at 43-42 but that would be as close as the Lancers would get. Rhode Island College struggled from the line throughout the game, but hit their shots from the line down the stretch to close out the game. The Lancers could only muster three points in the final five minutes of play. On the night, Rhode Island College was led by Ryan, who finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Liz Shields (Warwick, RI), who entered the game needing 15 for 1,000 in her career was one of three Anchorwomen to finish with 9 points. Worcester State was led by junior Donna Zwemke (Ware, MA) who finished with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds for her 7th double-double of the season. The loss drops the Lancers to 11-9 on the season, while RIC improves to 12-8. Worcester State will return to action on Saturday when they return to MASCAC action and visit the Owls of Westfield State. Rhode Island College will host the Beacons of UMass-Boston. ##### |
