Lancers Defeat Fitchburg State, 66-59 For Immediate Release: 2/3/04 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730
Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College women’s basketball team defeated the Falcons of Fitchburg State for the second time this season by the score of 66-59, in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College Tuesday evening.The Lancers led 34-20 at the break as they shot 47% from the field. Fitchburg led 2-0 to open game and then Worcester State took the lead at 4-2 and never trailed again. Donna Zwemke (Ware, MA) paced the Lancers in the first half with 10 points and 6 rebounds. The Falcons were led by Jen Fontaine (Dracut,MA) who had 9 in the first half. The second half saw the Lancers extend their lead to as much as 18 points but the Falcons would not go away narrowing the margin 6 before Worcester State was able to withstand the charge and win by 7. Zwemke scored 18 points in the second half which saw the Falcons outscore the Lancers 39-32in the stanza. Zwemke had a huge game for Worcester State. The junior co-captain totaled 28 points and 11 rebounds on the night for her 6th double-double of the season. Junior Kathy Ward (Fall River, MA) chipped in with 12 points and 5 assists. Fitchburg was led by Fontaine's team high 19 points as well Samantha Sweeney's (Haverhill, MA) who had 11 points and collected 11 rebounds. The win improves the Lancers to 11-8, 6-1 MASCAC, while Fitchburg falls to 11-6 and 3-4 in conference action. Worcester State will play an out of conference game on Thursday as they host Rhode Island College. Fitchburg State return to action on Saturday when they visit Salem State College. ##### |
