Worcester State Knocks Off Pride, 54-51

Worcester, MA - In non-conference action Thursday night, the Worcester State College women’s basketball team defeated the visiting Pride of Springfield College by the final score of, 54-51, in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College.

The Lancers opened the game with an 11-0 run and outscored the Pride 17-5 in the first 12 minutes of action to open up a 35-22 margin at the break. In the first half, the Lancers had 3 runs of at least 6 unanswered points. Worcester State was paced by juniors Donna Zwemke (Ware, MA) and Trisha Crane (Hubbardston, MA) who scored 10 and 8 points, respectively. Springfield was led by Erin Schwartz (Milford, CT) with 7 first-half points.

Springfield made a second half move behind a 13-0 run in a 6 minute span to tie the game at 42-42 with 8 minutes remaining. Zwemke broke the WSC drought with a three pointer to give the Lancers a 45-42 edge.

The Pride took their first lead of the game with 4:40 remaining on a bucket by sophomore Katie Trice (Concord, NH). With 3:25 remaining and Springfield leading 51-48, Zwemke hit her 2nd 3-pointer of the game to tie the game at 51-51. Neither team scored over the next 1:39 before Zwemke hit the game-winning 3-point shot.

Springfield had a chance to cut the lead to one, but freshman Brittany Rheault (Oxford, MA), who had 12 boards on the night, blocked an attempted lay-up to ice the victory for the Lancers.

Zwemke finished with a game-high 19 points and 9 rebounds while sophomore Amada Kowal (Oxford, MA) scored 10. Springfield was led by LaToya Franklin (Latham, NY) with 12 points while Kate Baumann (Berlin, CT) chipped in with 11.

The win improves the Lancers to 8-7 on the season, while Springfield falls to 9-6.

Worcester State will return to action on Saturday when they return to MASCAC action and visit MCLA. Springfield will also be in conference action as they travel to Wellesley College.
