Worcester State Defeats Westfield in OT, 46-45

Worcester, MA - With just 6 seconds remaining in overtime and trailing 45-44, junior Kathy Ward (Fall River, MA) fired a perfect pass through the key to fellow co-captain Donna Zwemke (Ware, MA) who hit the game winning shot to propel the Worcester State College women’s basketball team past the Owls of Westfield State, 46-45 Saturday afternoon in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College.

Westfield led 39-38 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Coming out of a timeout Ward drove down the lane and was fouled. The Durfee High product hit 1 of 2 free throws to send the game into an extra session.

In overtime, Westfield took the lead and with 40 seconds remaining was leading, 45-44, before Ward connected with Zwemke for the game winning shot.

Zwemke had a monster game for the Lancers. The junior forward finished the game with a game high 17 points, including 5 of Worcester State’s 7 overtime points. She also grabbed 11 boards and blocked 2 shots. Ward chipped in with 5 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Westfield was led by Lekisha Walker (Springfield) who finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

The win improves the Lancers to 6-7 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Westfield falls to 9-3 and 1-1 in the conference.

Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Framingham to take on the Rams. Westfield will host MASCAC rival Salem State on Tuesday as well.
