Worcester State Falls to #8 E. Connecticut, 61-39 For Immediate Release: 1/15/04 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730
Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College women’s basketball team fell to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University by the score of 61-39 Thursday evening in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College. The loss drops the Lancers to 5-7 on the season while Eastern Connecticut, ranked 8th in the nation, improves to 12-1.Eastern Connecticut jumped out to a 30-18 lead at the break behind solid play from All-American guard Allison Coleman (Jewett City, CT) and Sandy Mosley (Goshen, CT). Coleman had 8 points and 5 rebounds in the first half. Junior center Jenn Harris (Middleboro, MA) led the Lancers in the first half with 6 points. Both teams struggled from the floor shooting just 33%, but the Warriors had 9 more shots as they hit the offensive glass grabbing 8 offensive rebounds before the half. The second half was more of the same as the Lancers struggled with turnovers all night. The balanced Eastern Connecticut attack was too much for Worcester State to overcome with Eastern Connecticut winning by a final tally of 61-39. The Warriors were led by Coleman and Mosley who both finished with 12 points. Coleman also had 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Worcester State was paced by junior Donna Zwemke (Ware, MA) who had a solid night scoring 13 points and collecting 9 rebounds. Worcester State will return to MASCAC action this weekend as they host the Owls of Westfield State. Eastern Connecticut will also return to conference play as they host UMass-Boston on Saturday. ##### |
