Worcester State College Mens Track and Field Highlights MASCAC /Alliance Conference Championships 4/26/08
The Worcester State Mens Track and Field team survived a tough weekend finishing third in the MASCAC Championships and fifth overall in the combined Alliance Conference standings. Four Worcester State athletes were crowned MASCAC champions in their event. Leading the way was Rob Lind, who won the 10,000m in a personal best time of 33:27.09 that also betters his qualifying time for the D3 New England Championships. Lind then rested up a little before competing in the 5000m race at the end of the meet where he finished 5th overall in the MASCACs. Junior captain had a reasonably good day despite limited practice throughout the week. Johnson won the MASCAC long jump with a leap of 212 in the competition. He then finished second overall in the javelin in both the MASCAC and the Alliance competitions. His mark was a personal best of 18310 for the event. Though not 100%, Johnson also finished 5th in the MASCAC 200m and anchored the 4 x100m relay to a 4th place finish. Freshman Cam Herzog exploded in the high jump to new heights clearing 64 for a win and a personal record. The win propelled Herzog into the D3 New England and DIII ECAC list of qualifiers. Herzog also stepped up in his other specialty, the javelin, recording a throw of 1761 for 5th place. Cam was not yet done with personal records. He cleared 115.25 for his best effort in the pole vault giving the Lancers a 1st and 2nd place punch in the event despite losing WSCs top vaulter to a freak injury this week. Freshman Bill Fitzgerald won the vault on fewer misses also at 115.25 in the event. Herzog completed his afternoon with a third in the 110m hurdles despite almost taking a spill over an early hurdle. Senior Nate Perreault joined his teammates in the javelin final with a personal best for the second time this week heaving the spear 1610 for 7th place overall in the MASCAC. Standout freshman Nate Starling was able to manage a 4th place finish in the 110m hurdles and finished 6th in the 100m dash despite not running the final after qualifying for it. The distance crew added additional points with two solid performances by Forest Wilber. Wilber, filling in for DIII NE qualifier, Justin Snair ran 10:15.20 for 2nd in the steeplechase and returned in the 5000m to finish with a time of 15:59.84 for 3rd in the event. Chris Mancuso finished 5th in the 1500m. He lead off the 4 x400m relay helping them to 3rd place in the final running event of the day. He joined Bill Fitzgerald, Pius Oyelohunnu, and Robert(RJ) Stahelski in the relay. Oyelohunnu, Fitzgerald, Kevin Pitts, and Mark Johnson had combined earlier in the 4 x 100m relay for 4th place in that event. The throwing squad met with some success as well. Senior Jon Remkus with a pair of sixth place finishes in the shot put and the discus having a PR in the discus in the process. Jim Macera added points in the hammer throw with a toss of 12511 and then just missed points in the shot put taking 7th in the MASCAC. Though the final outcome was somewhat of a disappointment, many stepped up to preserve a respectable finish. The combination of very competitive fields and some bad luck hampered the Lancers. However, some had personal bests and 12 athletes will continue on to next weeks D3 New England Championships. |
