Worcester State Men’s Track and Field Highlights-4/22/08 @Holy Cross

 URI 245, UNH 141, Holy Cross 120, Worcester State 36, Quinnipiac 33

The Worcester State Men’s Track and Field Team participated again in the Holy Cross’ annual late April, Tuesday meet that traditionally brings good weather and good performances for the Lancers. In a tune-up for the Conference meet, a number of athletes had their season best performances in this meet, an opportunity for the DIII Lancers to compete against several D1 teams and compete well in a number of events. The Lancers placed in 12 of 19 events with 14 athletes having season bests or PRs. Leading the squad was junior Chris Mancuso who ran  a 1:58.10 in the 800m to qualify for the DIII New England Championships and placed 4th overall in the event.  Javelin Thrower, senior Nate Perreault also qualified for the D3 New Englands with a throw of 160’2” and made the finals to finish 7th overall. Freshman Bill Fitzgerald had three season best performances including a career best in the pole vault with an 11’3”vault for 7th place along with an 11.60 in the 100m and a 23.35 in the 200m. Freshman Cam Herzog had a personal best in the 110m hurdles with a 16.53 for 4th place overall and just shy of D3 New England qualifying. Multi-eventer, Mark Johnson, placed 3rd in the long jump (21’4”), 4th in the 400m (51.24), and 5th in the javelin (172’4”). He also ran the anchor leg of the 4x 100m relay that finished third. The throwing crew improved as they have each meet. Those who had season bests were Joe Naikelis (javelin, hammer), and Jon Remkus, Frank Arena, Paul Owusu, and Rob Sharma (all in the discus).  Others who faired well with season bests include Robert Basmaji (400m), Louis Dinatale (400m hurdles), Norman Everett (800m), Stephen Gemme (1500), and Pius Oyelohunnu (400m). As a team, Worcester State was able to eke out enough points to finish ahead of Quinnipiac,          a moral victory in besting a D1 team with a well rounded squad.
