Worcester State College Men’s Track & Field Highlights

Connecticut College “Silfen Inv”/ Springfield Inv – 4/19/08

The Worcester State College Men’s Track and Field team had an impressive day competing with a split squad at Connecticut College and Springfield College. While sending the throwers to Springfield with the throws coach and the women, the remainder of the team competed in the Silfen Invitational at Conn College.  The team finished third overall with more than a dozen teams competing despite not having the majority of the throwers at the meet. Again this week, a number of athletes had solid performances and added to the scoring. Junior captain Mark Johnson won the 100 and 200m dashes with times of 11.49 and 22.57 respectively in the two events. In his busy day, Johnson added a 5th in the long jump (20’9.75”) and a 6th in the javelin (162’9”) as well as anchoring the 4x100m and 4 x 400m relays. Running 44.13 in the 4 x 100m relay, Johnson joined Pius Oyelohunnu, Bill Fitzgerald, and Kevin Pitts for a second place effort.  Running 3:31.71 the 4 x 400m relay, he joined Chris Mancuso, Fitzgerald, and Oyelohunnu for fifth place overall.  Oyelohunnu ran a PR on his leg of the 4 x 4 and also placed 6th in the 200m (23.34) and 7th in the 100m (11.96).  Mancuso was 5th in the 800m with a time of 1:59.49 in the event. Also having a busy day was freshman Cam Herzog who won the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.61 in the event. Herzog also finished third in the Javelin (170’0”) and 8th in the pole vault with a personal best of 11’3.50”. In addition, he competed in the 100m and B 4 x 100m relay though not placing. Also in the vault, freshman Lou Dinatale finished 6th and Bill Fitzgerald finished 9th.  Distance standout, junior Forest Wilber, ran 4:08.68 to finish third in the 1500m. Senior Nate Perrault just missed scoring but still had a personal record of 147’10” in the javelin.

At Springfield, competing in several events, Jim Macera and Robert Anderson did well in the hammer throw, while senior Jon Remkus excelled in the shot put and Joe Naikelais had a good day in the javelin. Paul Owusu and Rob Sharma made progress in the discus.  With the conference meet scheduled next week, peak performances are happening at the right time.
