Men's Track Meet Recap

Worcester State College Track and Field Highlights

Worcester City Meet @ WPI - 3/29/08

WPI: 105    Worcester St: 68    Assumption: 18    Clark: 1

Fighting off cold temperatures and stiff competition, the Worcester State Men’s Track and Field team had a number of strong performances at the Worcester City Meet. Though losing to WPI overall, the Lancers were able to win 7 events and also gain three DIII New England and ECAC qualifiers despite the blustery conditions.  The first champion and qualifier was junior captain Mark Johnson who won the long jump with a distance of 21’10”. Mark added a qualifier in the javelin with a toss of 173’10” in that event for a second place finish. He also added wins in the 400m (51.76) and 200m (23.03). For good measure, Johnson took fourth in the triple jump leaping 38’5.50” in that event. Joining Johnson as a qualifier in the javelin for both DIII championship competitions was freshman Cam Herzog. Herzog had a toss of 171’7” to register a personal best in his first collegiate competition in the event. Junior Chris Mancuso won the 800m running a 2:02.92, leading the race from start to finish. Freshman Lou Dinatale won the pole vault at 3.65m (11’11.75”) while freshman teammate Dennis Kane won the high jump at 6’0” in the vertical jump. Junior distance standout, Forest Wilber ran a conservative race in the 5000m winning in a time of 15:55.93 as the Lancers also took third and fourth place in the event.  Backing up Wilber were local runners sophomore Adam Malek(3rd) running 16:17.21 and junior Rob Lind running right behind in 16:17.91 for the distance event. Several others took second place finishes at the meet.  Last week’s standout, freshman Nate Starling was second in the 110 hurdles (16.22) and the triple jump(39’1.25”).  Teammate Justin Snair did the same in the 3000m steeplechase running 10:29.40 while mixing distance with the hurdle barriers. In the throws, sophomore Jim Macera took 5th in the hamme and 6th in the shot put while senior stalwart Jon Remkus was fourth in  both the shot put and the discus. Despite the frigid conditions for a spring meet, it was a very productive weekend.
