Men’s Soccer – ECAC Quarterfinals
#4 Worcester State Prevails in 2OT Over #5 Coast Guard, 2-1
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State College men’s soccer team posted a dramatic come from behind victory Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field in the ECAC quarterfinal match-up against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The fourth seeded Lancers scored in the 88th minute in regulation to tie the game and then in the 108th minute in the second overtime to earn the, 2-1, win over the fifth seeded Bears.
Coast Guard opened the scoring in the 9th minute when a Worcester State foul set up a virtual corner kick for the visitors and junior Ben Walsh (Suffield, CT) sent a ball across the box and junior James Toohey (Temple Terrace, FL) punched home the first goal of the game. That would be all the scoring in the frame as Coast Guard out shot the Lancers 10-8 in the first half.
In the second half, the Lancers picked up the pressure over the last 20 minutes of play and capitalized in the 88th minute when senior Eder Baptista (Pawtucket, RI) scored the game-tying goal, unassisted, to knot the game, 1-1, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game appeared to be headed to a shootout with time winding down in the second overtime but with just over a minute remaining, junior Josh Richard (Westminster, MA) passed the ball through the crease where junior Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) was able to convert for the game winner.
Worcester State goalkeeper Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) made 4 saves in the double overtime victory. Coast Guard keeper Tim Olah (Glastonbury, CT) made 4 saves in the hard luck loss
Worcester State will now travel to Norwich University to take on the top seeded Cadets on Saturday. Coast Guard concludes their season with a 9-7-1 record.
