GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Matt Brothers (Auburn, Mass.) scored on a direct free kick with four minutes remaining in regulation to give the Worcester State College Lancers a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win was the second straight for the Lancers and levels their record at 2-2-0.  The Huskies, winners in their first three matches this season and five straight dating back to last year, slip to 3-1-0.
Brothers directed a low, 25-yard drive past the Huskies' defensive wall and off the hands of sophomore goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) with 3:59 showing on the clock to give the Lancers the victory.
The sides traded goals three minutes apart midway through the first half.  Worcester State sophomore Wesley Simoes (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill), who had just enter the game, took a pass across the top of the 18-yard box from senior Eddy Baptista (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) and beat Kreps with a shot back to the left side in the 21st minute.
Southern Maine equalized in the 24th minute when junior Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia/Portland) flicked a header past Worcester State sophomore goalkeeper Dan Hansen (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian).  Senior Eddie Weddington (Augusta, Maine/Cony) pick up the assist with a long throw in that Bajic redirected.
Hansen played an outstanding match for the Lancers making seven saves.  Kreps finished the match with one save.  Southern Maine held a 17-8 edge in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.
The Huskies will entertain the University of Maine at Farmington on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-conference match.  The Lancers will travel to Keene State College for a match under the lights (6:30 p.m.) on Tuesday.
