Worcester, MA – Sophomore midfielder Wesley Simoes (Charlton, MA) found the back of the net on a pass from Eddy Baptista (Pawtucket, RI) in the 59th minute Saturday afternoon as the host Lancers or Worcester State defeated the Fitchburg State College Falcons, 1-0, at Coughlin Field. The win improves the Lancers to 4-6 (1-1 MASCAC0 on the year, while Fitchburg State falls to 3-4-1 (0-2 MASCAC).
The Lancers controlled much of the action on the afternoon as they out shot the visitors 16-5 and hit the post on a pair of occasions.
Simoes, who is second on the team in scoring, now has four goals in 2007. Proving to have a golden foot, Simoes has now accounted for the game-winner in three of the four Lancer wins on the year.
Keeper Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) stopped four Falcon shots on the day including a spectacular, diving save in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Fitchburg State goaltender Matthew Carey (Stratford, CT) made 9 saves in the loss.
Worcester State will host Western Connecticut on Wednesday evening while, Fitchburg State will travel to Clark University on Wednesday.
