Salem, MA - Viking freshman midfielder
Marcus Pizzetti scored the game-winner with
just 2:25 to play in the second 10-minute
sudden death overtime period to lift the
Vikings to a 2-1 decision over the Worcester
State College Lancers in a Massachusetts
State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC)
match played at Alumni Field.
SSC (5-1 overall; 1-0 MASCAC), who won its third straight match, received the "Golden Goal" from Pizzetti (Cambridge), who broke in alone from 10 yards out with assists being credited to junior forward Jared Barbosa (Lowell) and junior defender Padraic Boscoe (Dartmouth). It was Pizzetti's first collegiate goal.
The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead
just 3:58 into the match after Barbosa was
hauled down in the box from 15 yards out.
SSC was awarded a penalty kick opportunity,
and Barbosa did not dissapoint the home
crowd as he stepped up and drilled a sharp
groundball to the left corner past the dive
of Lancer freshman goalkeeper Daniel Hansen
(Worcester).
The Lancers (2-4 overall; 0-1 MASCAC) would
convert their own penalty kick chance with
just 7:17 to play in regulation when junior
midfielder Matt Brothers (Auburn) was pulled
down in the box from 18 yards away.
Brothers' penalty kick attempt was stopped
by Viking junior goalkeeper Pawel Brzykcy
(Krakow, Poland), but the rebound came back
to Brothers who fired it home for the 1-1
tie.
SSC, who outshot the Lancers, 22-8, for the match, carried the play to the Lancers in overtime. The Vikings held a 6-0 shot advantage during the extra 17:23 played. Hansen came up big for the visitors, making three of his eight saves during the extra periods. Brzykcy made four stops for the match.
The Vikings next match will Tuesday,
September 25 when SSC plays host to the
Beacons of the University of
Massachusetts/Boston at 6:00 pm at Alumni
Field.
