Men's Soccer Defeats Framingham in 2 OT, 2-1
Worcester, MA- Worcester State co-captain Matt Brothers (Auburn, MA) drilled a direct kick over the wall and past the screened Framingham State keeper in the 102nd minute of action to give the Lancers a much needed, 2-1, double overtime win over the visiting Rams of Framingham State College Monday night at Coughlin Field. The win evens the Lancers overall record to 6-6-1 while they improve to 2-1-1 in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference action. Framingham falls to 7-3-1 overall and suffers their first MASCAC loss and now stand at 3-1 conference action.
Framingham State opened the scoring in the 15th minute when freshman Scott Faria (Fall River, MA) launched a 40 yard shot that got over the outstretched arms of Worcester State’s net minder to give the visitors a, 1-0, lead that would stand through the first half of play.
Worcester State got the equalizer in the second half from junior Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) who cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Framingham State net for his fifth goal of the season in the 65th minute. The teams would end regulation deadlocked at, 1-1.
Worcester State had the best opportunity in the first overtime to end the contest when junior Paul Membrino (Fitchburg, MA) served a ball across the front of the net and Dennis Kane (Monson, MA) put a shot on net but 2006 All MASCAC 1st team goalkeeper Eddie Polumba (Saugus, MA) made a stellar save to keep the contest knotted at, 1-1.
In the second overtime, a Framingham State foul just outside the box led to the Brothers direct kick with 101:24 elapsed in the match.
Worcester State keeper Daniel Hansen (Worcester, MA) made 3 saves on the night, while Palomba stopped 4 Lancer shots.
Worcester State will return to action on Wednesday when the travel to national power Wheaton College. Framingham State will host Fisher College on Wednesday.
