Men's Soccer Defeats WestConn, 2-1
Worcester, MA- The Worcester State College men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Colonials of Western Connecticut State University Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field by the final score of, 2-1. With the win the Lancers are now 5-6, while the loss drops the visitors to the identical, 5-6, record.
Worcester State got on the
board first scoring the lone first half
goal, when freshman Dennis Kane (Monson,
MA) scored his first collegiate goal on
a beautiful pass from junior Miguel Vidal
(Grafton, MA). The Lancers out shot the
Colonials 10-5 in the half with Western
Connecticut keeper Anthony Belanger
(Thomaston, CT) making 6 stops in the
first frame, while Worcester State goalie
Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) stopped 3
shots.
Midway through the second half, Western
Connecticut tied the game when sophomore
Shane Edgley (Naugatuck, CT) converted
on a penalty kick after a Worcester State
foul in the box.
Worcester State got the game-winner in the 67th minute when junior Matt Brothers (Auburn, MA) matched Edgley by finishing off a penalty kick of his own after a Western Connecticut violation.
For the night, Jenkins
finished with his 3 saves, while Belanger
totaled 9 saves on the night.
Worcester State returns to MASCAC action on
Saturday when they travel to MCLA to take on
the Trailblazers. Western Connecticut will
be back on the pitch Saturday morning when
they travel to Plymouth State.
