WORCESTER, MA – Clark University men’s soccer battled to a 1-1 draw against Worcester State College in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
Clark owns the most ties in a season with a 5-3-6 mark. Playing in its fifth straight overtime game, Worcester State moves to 8-6-2.
Mike Trobagis (Acton, Mass.) got Clark on the board first. After Devin Weafer’s (Carmel, N.Y.) ball from the backfield found Trobagis out in front, the junior forward beat Lancer keeper Daniel Hansen (Worcester, Mass.) to give Clark the 1-0 advantage at 36:16.
The Cougars had a chance to extend their lead, but Greg Jancarik’s (Swansea, Mass.) bid on the right side was stopped point blank by Hansen at the 21:49 mark.
Worcester State’s best chance for the equalizer came with just under 30 seconds remaining in the half. Junior Mark Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) took a hard shot from 25-yards out that was deflected just wide of the left post.
Clark lost its shutout bid when freshman Anthony Escobar (Leicester, Mass.) fired a shot just inside the 18-yard box in the 56th minute. Senior Eder Baptista (Pawtucket, R.I.) got an assist on the play.
Both teams had strong chances late in regulation. Trobagis’ header was called off-sides at the 20 minute mark and a pair of shots by Worcester State’s Escobar went wide and was turned away by Clark goalie Peter Wise (Providence, R.I.), respectively, with just over 11 minutes remaining.
The first overtime saw limited chances for both teams.
Clark had a strong opportunity in the second extra-session, however, a drive from senior Marc Labbe’s (Waterville, Me.) sailed high with just over a minute left.
Wise made four saves in goal for Clark. Hansen stopped three shots before giving way to Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, Ga.) (0 saves) for Worcester State.
Worcester State outshot Clark 18-11 and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Clark will travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday (1 p.m.). Worcester State will travel to Westfield State College that same day at 6 p.m.
