NORTON, MA-
Junior Daniel Padilla (Worcester,
MA/Saint John's) sent home the
game-winner for the only goal of the contest
in the 93rd minute as Worcester State
College downed Wheaton College, 1-0 in
overtime on Wednesday at Keefe Field.
The Lyons, who are ranked seventh in New
England by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), are now
8-4-3 on the season, while the Lancers are
7-6-1. Wheaton has allowed exactly one goal
in each of the past three games, and one or
less 10 times this season.
The teams traded golden opportunities during
the first half. In the 17th minute, Wheaton
freshman David Ferriero's (Medway,
MA/Medway) touch on the doorstep was
cleared out by sophomore keeper Daniel
Hansen (Worcester, MA/Saint Peter-Marian),
who slid out of the cage to knock the ball
free. Seventeen minutes later, Lancer junior
Josh Richard (Westminster, MA/Oakmont)
collected a loose ball behind the defense
and sent a high shot on net, but Wheaton
junior back Ben Resnicow (Newton,
MA/Newton North) flew in front of the
shot and headed the ball away.
Worcester State again challenged in the 57th
minute, but senior Eder Baptista's
(Pawtucket, RI/Tolman) free kick was
punched over the crossbar by freshman keeper
Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury).
At 57:12, Wheaton was awarded a penalty
kick, but senior Dan Chong's (Miami,
FL/Coral Reef) attempt at hitting the
left side of the net was denied by a diving
Hansen.
The only shot of overtime came off the foot
of Padilla. In the 93rd minute, his arching
ball from just beyond the left side of the
box curled inside the upper right corner of
the frame and beyond a stretched out
Davidson at 92:31 to end the contest.
Wheaton finished with advantages of 25-11 in
shots and 10-6 in corner kicks. Davidson
made four stops, while Hansen turned in a
12-save effort.
The Blue and White hits the road for a pair
of contests in Maine this weekend. Its first
is on Saturday at Husson College at 12:00
p.m.
