September 9, 2006 Worcester, MA- Sophomore midfielder Greg Cox (Brookline, MA) knocked home a deflected shot in the 20th minute to provide all the scoring the University of Southern Maine would need to defeat the host Lancers of Worcester state College Saturday afternoon at Worcester State’s Coughlin Field by the final score of, 1-0. The Lancers fall to 1-2 on the season while the Huskies even up at 2-2. The Lancers had several chances late in the second half to tie the contest up but Southern Maine goaltender Chris Willard (Willimantic, CT) stopped a Worcester State penalty kick with just under 8 minutes to play and inside of four minutes, Worcester State had a goal called back due to offsides. Both goaltenders had good days as Lancer backstop Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) stopped 7 shots. His counterpart, Willard, stopped 3 Lancer offerings on the afternoon. Worcester State will be back in action next Friday when they play the first of back to back games in New York taking on the Dutchmen of Union College.
