Worcester State Eliminated By Westfield, 1-0

The Worcester State College Lancer men’s soccer
team was eliminated from the Massachusetts State
College Athletic Conference postseason
tournament Wednesday evening, falling in the
semifinals to the Westfield State College Owls
by the final score of 1-0. Worcester State
finishes the season with a 7-11-1 record.
Westfield State, who advances to the finals on
Saturday, is now 10-8.
The lone tally on the afternoon came in the 59th
minute when junior midfielder Chris Spicer
(Carver, MA) played a beautiful cross which
junior forward Nick Gumlaw (Agawam, MA)
headed past the Worcester State keeper to give
the Owls the 1-0 lead.
Worcester State had their best
opportunity of the day when an Eder Baptista
(Pawtucket, RI) redirected a free kick with
2:34 remaining in the game but the shot was
stopped on a diving save by Westfield State
keeper Mark Tiffany (Easthampton, MA)
Worcester State goalkeeper Albert Jenkins
(Thomaston, GA) made 6 saves on the
afternoon for the Lancers, while Tiffany stopped
4 Lancer offerings.
Westfield State now awaits the winner of the #1
Salem State/#4 Bridgewater State semifinal match
which is being played at 6:00 pm tonight at
Salem State.
