Worcester State Defeats Mass Maritime, 3-1

Worcester, MA- The Worcester State College Lancer men’s soccer team defeated the visiting Buccaneers of  Massachusetts Maritime Academy Saturday afternoon by the final score of, 3-1, at Worcester State’s rainy Coughlin Field.  The win sets the Lancers record at 7-10-1 (5-1-1 MASCAC).  Mass Maritime falls to 6-12 (1-6 MASCAC).

Sophomore Eric Owens (Newton, NH) opened the scoring in the 4th minute when he volleyed a pass to himself and knocked home the first goal of the game to give Worcester State a, 1-0, lead.

In the 27th minute junior midfielder Josh Richard (Westminster, MA) took a rebound off a hard shot by sophomore Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) to give the Lancers the tally that would prove to be the difference.

Mass Maritime got on the board just before the break as senior Andrew Del Prete (Rockland, MA) cut the Worcester State lead in half to, 2-1, in the 44th minute.

The teams played a scoreless second half until Andrade scored his 14th goal of the season with just over 3 minutes remaining to secure the win.

Goalkeeper Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) made 5 saves for Worcester State, while his counterpart Tim Meighan (E. Bridgewater, MA) stopped 6 Worcester State shots.

Worcester State has secured the second seed in the upcoming MASCAC postseason Tournament and will await the results of the upcoming Salem State vs. Westfield State contest to determine their first round opponent.  Mass Maritime has concluded their season.
