October
21, 2006 Worcester, MA- The Worcester State College Lancer men’s soccer team lost their first regular season MASCAC game in over three years Saturday afternoon as the visiting Owls of Westfield State College knocked off the hosts, 2-1. Worcester State hadn’t lost a MASCAC game since October 25, 2003 in a, 1-0, loss to Bridgewater State College. The loss drops the Lancers to third in the MASCAC standings with a 4-1-1 conference mark (6-10-1 overall), while Westfield State is now tied for the top spot with a 5-1 mark (9-6 overall) along with Salem State College. Westfield State took a, 1-0, lead into the break on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jeff Trudrea (Swansea, MA). The Owls added to their advantage in the second half when forward Nick Gumlaw (Agawam, MA) found the back of the net to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Worcester State cut the deficit when Worcester State leading scorer Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) notched his 13th goal of the season but that would be as close as Worcester State would get on the day. Worcester State plays its final regular season game next Saturday against the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Westfield State will return to Worcester on Wednesday to take on WPI. ##### |
