Worcester State Falls in OT, 72-67
Worcester, MA
– The Worcester State College Lancer men’s basketball team fell in their
MASCAC opener Tuesday night losing to the visiting Falcons of Fitchburg
State in overtime by the final score of 72-67. Junior guard Brian
Torres (North Dighton, MA) buried a jumper with 8 seconds remaining
in overtime to push the Falcons into the lead for good, 68-67, and give
the Falcons the win. A pair of free throws and a last second lay-up
gave Fitchburg the 5 point margin of victory.
Fitchburg State led, 58-56, with 30 seconds left in regulation on a
lay-up by freshman center Tim Graham (Arlington, MA) but senior
forward Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) hit a deep jumper for
Worcester State to tie the game at, 58-58, with 6 seconds remaining
sending the game to the overtime session.
Freshman Patrick Hamilton (Templeton, MA) was one of two Lancers
who reached double digits in scoring for the night as Worcester State
struggled shooting just 39.4% from the filed. Senior Winfred Rembert
(New Haven, CT) also hit double figures scoring 10 points and
grabbing 8 rebounds.
Torres led all scorers on the night with 24 points including 6 of 10
from beyond the arc on the night. Torres also hauled in 9 rebounds.
Sophomore Mike Woods (Arlington, MA) scored 19 points (9 of 10
from the free throw line), guard Jeff Kozik (Auburn, MA) added 11
and center Andrew Vayo (Waterville, ME) chipped in with 10
points.
Worcester State did finish the game with a rebounding advantage of
48-34.
Worcester State returns to action on Thursday when they host the Amcats
of Anna Maria College. Fitchburg State will host Salem State on
Saturday afternoon.
