Worcester State Loses To Salve, 71-65

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Matt Grendal [Foxboro, Mass.] scored 16 points
and grabbed 11 rebounds as Salve Regina held off a second-half surge by
Worcester State for a 71-65 non-conference win in men's basketball
action Thursday.
The Seahawks (6-3) raced out to a 40-23 lead at halftime, thanks to a
defensive effort that held Worcester State (3-6) to 9-of-33 (27.3
percent) from the floor. Salve Regina maintained a double-digit lead
until a jumper by the Lancers' Bobby Wilson [SR/Hamden, Conn.] pulled
the visitors within 64-55.
An 11-3 run by Worcester State made it 66-61 with 56 seconds remaining,
but the Seahawks made 5-of-6 from the free throw line to ice the win.
Sophomore Justin Woodworth [Ipswich, Mass.] tied Grendal with a
team-best 16 points, while junior Chris Goodridge [Merrimack, N.H.]
added 14 points and four steals for Salve Regina, which shot 25-of-54
(46.3 percent) from the floor as a team. Junior Steve Walsh [Manchester,
N.H.] was a perfect 4-of-4 from the
floor for the Seahawks, finishing with eight points and four rebounds.
Junior guard Ryan Frassica [Brockton, Mass.] scored a game-high 20
points for Worcester State, which also got 14 points from junior Will
Spont [Bellingham, Mass.] and 13 points and 13 rebounds from junior
forward Winfred Rembert [New Haven, Conn.].
