FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State jumped out an early 15-point cushion and never looked back in a 67-52 triumph over visiting Worcester State Tuesday night in MASCAC action.
Junior forward Brian Torres (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) led the way for the Falcons, recording a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds) on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, to help Fitchburg improve to 5-13 overall and 3-4 in the MASCAC.
The Lancers were led by junior forward Will Spont (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) and senior forward Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT/Gateway CC), who put home 13 and 12 points, respectively, but it was not enough for Worcester, which fell to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in MASCAC play.
Perhaps the biggest momentum shift occurred just before the half when Torres found sophomore guard Mike Woods (Arlington, MA/Arlington Catholic) alone in the corner for a buzzer-beating jumper that gave the Falcons a 42-26 halftime lead. To that point, it was the hosts’ biggest lead of the night. FSC would go on to extend the cushion to as many as 20 points in the second half and the Falcon lead never dropped below 11 points in the final 20 minutes.
Woods finished with 10 points, five assists and seven rebounds for Fitchburg, while sophomore center Andrew Vayo (Waterville, ME/Waterville) put home 15 points and sophomore guard Jeff Kozik (Auburn, MA/Auburn) added 13 points for the victors.
Senior forward Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA/Oxford) chipped in seven points and five rebounds for the Lancers, who shot 34 percent from the field compared to 43 percent for the Falcons.
Worcester will look to get back on track Saturday when it hosts Westfield while Fitchburg will travel to Salem State that same day.
