Worcester State Men Fall To Salem State, 74-59

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College men’s basketball team fought back from a Salem State College, 14-1, run that opened the game but eventually succumbed to the visiting Vikings by the final score of, 74-59, Saturday afternoon in Lancer Gymnasium.  Worcester State falls to 7-12 (2-4 MASCAC) while Salem State improves to 15-2 (6-0 MASCAC).

Worcester State opened the game able to muster just one point over the first 5:22 of the contest as Salem State opened up the, 14-1, lead.  But the Lancers battled back as the Lancers cut the lead to a single point, 20-19, at the 6:20 mark and would come within one several more time but were unable to take the lead.  Trailing by just 2 points with 3:32 left, junior guard Marquis Victor (Lawrence, MA) scored 5 points before Worcester State sophomore Jose Roman (Framingham, MA) closed the half with a buzzer beater to set the halftime score at, 33-28.

Worcester State took the lead in the second half when freshman Patrick Hamilton (Templeton, MA) drilled a three pointer to give the Lancers a, 44-43, lead with just over 11 minutes to play, but the Vikings answered right back on a  jumper by junior Alex Finn (Ashby, MA) to give the lead to the Vikings for good.  Salem State senior Eric Downie (Medford, MA) was dominant in the second half as he scored 18 points in the half including 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

For the game, Salem State shot 28-40 from the charity stripe while the Lancers struggled hitting just 9-of-21.

Worcester State was led by junior Ryan Frassica (Brockton, MA) who scored 15 points in the game.  Senior Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) was the only other Lancer to reach double figures scoring 10 points.  Downie led all scorers with 25 points on the day.  Finn added 15 points and senior Brandon McCombs (Springfield, MA) added 11 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. 

Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Fitchburg State to take on the Falcons.  Salem State will travel to UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday night.
