Worcester State Comes Back To Beat MCLA, 77-67
Worcester, MA
– The Worcester State College Lancer men’s basketball overcame a 15
point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Trailblazers of
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by the final score of, 77-67,
Saturday afternoon in Lancer Gymnasium. Worcester State is now 7-8 (2-2
MASCAC), while MCLA falls to 5-10 (1-2 MASCAC).
MCLA senior Adam Garner (N. Adams, MA) dominated the first half
for the Trailblazers as he scored 20 points including 6 three pointers
as the Trailblazers took a 15 point advantage, 43-28, into the break.
MCLA shot 55.2% from the field and as a team were 8 of 14 from beyond
the three point arc. Worcester State shot 48.1% and out-rebounded MCLA
24-9 in the half but couldn’t find an answer to Garner’s outside
shooting. Junior Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) was the only
offensive weapon the Lancers showed in the first half as she scored 12
points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field.
The second half was a different story though as the Lancers used an 18-4
run over an 8 minute span to take the lead, 55-54. In the half,
Worcester State would outscore the visitors 49-24. Guard Ryan
Frassica (Brockton, MA) led the Lancers offensively in the second
half with 13 points hitting 6 of 6 from the charity stripe. Spont had a
balanced afternoon scoring 12 more points in the second half. Garner
added 10 more points to his total in the second stanza for MCLA.
On the afternoon, Spont led Worcester State with 24 points (10 of 11 from the floor) and 11 rebounds. Frassica followed with 18 points. Senior forward Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) was immense as he scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds but he owned the paint tying a Worcester State record blocking 8 shots on the day and causing numerous turnovers. Senior Devon Jarvis (Queens, NY) had 11 rebounds and was effective guarding Garner in the second half.
Garner totaled 30 points on the day including 8 three pointers. Junior guard Dave Bisesi (Syracuse, NY) added 15 points for the Trailblazers in the loss.
Worcester State will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bridgewater State to take on the Bears. MCLA will host Salem State on Tuesday night.
