Worcester State Beats Framingham, 91-73

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer men’s basketball team got their first MASCAC win of the year Tuesday evening as they defeated the visiting Rams of Framingham State by the final score of, 91-73, in Lancer Gymnasium.  The win improves the Lancers to 6-8 (1-2 MASCAC) on the season, while the Rams fall to 6-9 (0-3 MASCAC).

The Lancers shot 50% form the field in the first half as they were led by senior forward Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) and junior Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.  Rembert was 6 for 7 from the field in the half.  Framingham State’s Josue Almodovar (Holyoke, MA) paced the Rams with 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting before being saddled with 3 fouls.  Junior Michael Costa (Holbrook, MA) also reached double digits with 10 first half points for the visitors.  Worcester State led by as many as 17 points in the first half before Framingham closed the half with a 10-3 run to set the score at, 47-37, at intermission.

The Lancers maintained a 10 point advantage, 58-48, with 13:48 remaining in the game when they went on a 19-6 run over a 6 minute stretch to take their largest lead of the game; a 23 point advantage, with just over 6:00 to play.

The Lancers improved on their first half shooting percentage and posted a final number of 52.3% from the floor.  Worcester State also had a 16 rebound advantage over the visitors on the night.

Spont led all scorers with 22 points.  Rembert finished with 16 and junior Ryan Frassica (Brockton, MA) added 15 points.  Freshman Brandon Fortes (Pawtucket, RI) had his best game of his young collegiate career scoring 12 points and handing out 8 assists.   Senior Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) also reached double digits in scoring posting 11 points in the victory.

Framingham State as led by Costa with 21 points followed by Almodovar with 20 and freshman Bill Carey (Abington, MA) who scored 16 points.

Worcester State returns to action on Thursday when they host Newbury College.  Framingham State returns to the court on Saturday when they host MASCAC foe Salem State.
