Worcester State Takes 3rd Place in City Tournament

(Worcester/Leicester, Mass.) – Worcester State’s men’s basketball team improved its record to 1-1 with a convincing win over Becker College 79-55 in the consolation match-up of the Worcester County Tip-Off Tournament. Becker drops to 0-2 on the season.
The teams traded baskets and the lead for most of the first half. The Lancers snapped a 22-22 tie with a 17-9 run over the last 7 minutes and took an eight point lead into the locker room. Junior guard Will Spont (Bellingham, MA) led the Lancers in the first half going 7-9 from the field with 15 points; the Hawks were led by Shawn Fuller (New Haven, CT) who had 11 points in the first half.
Worcester State broke the game wide open by starting the second half with 11-0 run and increased their lead to 20 points. Becker didn’t score a basket until Fuller hit a lay-up at the 13:13 mark. Spont finished the game with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds. Lancer Winfred Rembert (New Haven, CT) finished the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Hawks forward Jason Patterson hit 3 three pointers for 9 points and added 3 rebounds. Worcester State out rebounded the Hawks 47-27; The Lancers shot 52% for the game and the Hawks shot 37%.
Worcester States senior forward Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Hawks return to action when they take on Clark University at home on Tuesday November 21 at 7:00 pm. Worcester State travels to UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday November 21st for a 7:30 tip-off.
