Worcester State Edges Anna Maria, 65-60
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer men’s basketball team edged the Amcats of Anna Maria College by the final score of, 65-60, Thursday evening in Lancer Gymnasium. The Lancers broke a, 56-56, tie with 1:47 left and outscored the visitors 9-4 over that span to earn the win. The victory ups the Lancers record to 5-7 on the season, while Anna Maria falls to 3-9.
The
Lancers led by as many as 8 points in the first half and settled for a 6
point halftime advantage as senior Mark Retallic (Oxford, MA) led
all scorers with 10 points in the half on 5 for 6 from shooting from
the field. Junior Ryan Frassica (Brockton, MA) nailed three
treys for 9 points in the frame. Worcester State shot 48.3% from the
field while the defense was able to hold Anna Maria to 39.3% from the
floor. Anna Maria junior Quincy Nunnally (Westboro, MA) was a
perfect 4 for 4 from the field to lead the Amcats with 8 points.
Worcester State led by 11 with 12:52 left in the game, 45-34, when Anna
Maria went on a 12-0 run over a five minute span to take a 46-45 lead
with 7:44 to play. Worcester State responded with a quick 6-0 burst to
take a 51-46 lead with 5:31 to play behind a bucket by Retallic and four
points from junior Will Spont (Bellingham, MA). A jumper by
Nunnally and a three pointer by junior Anthony McDonald (Oxford, MA)
tied the game at 51-51. Anna Maria would take the lead until a Spont
free throw broke a, 56-56, tie to give the Lancers the lead for good.
Retallic finished with a game high 19 points for Worcester State, while
Spont added 13. Anna Maria had three players score 12 points in a
balanced attack with Nunnally, McDonald and Jim Daigneault
(Worcester, MA) all leading the Amcats in scoring.
Worcester State returns to action on Saturday when they head to Westfield state to resume their MASCAC schedule. Anna Maria will host Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon.
