Lancer Lacrosse Falls to Bridgewater State, 17-11

Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer women’s lacrosse team had their three game winning streak broken Tuesday evening on Coughlin Field as they fell, 17-11, to the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State College.  Worcester State, who is atop the New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance standings with a 2-0 conference record, is now 3-2 on the year.  Bridgewater State resets at 4-2 with the victory.

The game began with the two teams trading goals.  Bridgewater State got on the board first when freshman Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) found the back of the net 19 seconds into the contest.  Worcester State sophomore Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) answered right back at 29:14 off an assist by sophomore Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) to knot the game at, 1-1.  The back and forth continued as Bridgewater State’s Alicia Spolidoro (Duxbury, MA) and Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA) alternated scores with Feeley and reigning NEWLA Offensive Player of the Week Ann Clark (Worcester, MA) to set the score a, 3-3, at the 25:21 mark.

Bridgewater State then asserted itself outscoring the Lancers 7 to 1 the rest of the half to take a, 10-4, lead into the break.  The Bears got a pair of goals from Manning and Gugliotta in the run as well as single goals from Spolidoro, Katie DeMaio (Pt. Jefferson Station, NY) and senior Kathryn Sweeney (Norwood, MA).

It was more Bridgewater State in the first 12 minutes of the second half as they extended their lead to, 16-6, getting three more goals from Spolidoro and scores from Manning, Lauryn Serratore (Norwood, MA) and Erica Murphy (Weymouth, MA).

Worcester State made a final push outscoring the Bears 5 to 1 from 12:53 to the 5:13 mark with Feeley scoring three and Clark and freshman Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) adding lone tallies.

Feeley led Worcester State on the night with 5 goals and an assist.  Clark and Rosborough each chipped in with a pair of goals.  Freshman Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) and Cosenza each potted single goals.  Meredith Godfroy (Tyngsboro, MA) had a game-high 3 assists.  Clark’s two goals gives her 253 for her career which is good for 12th on the NCAA Division III all-time list.

Bridgewater was paced by Spolidoro’s 5 goals.  Manning finished the night with 4 and Gugliotta posted the hat trick.

Bears goaltender Jessica Cercone (Peabody, MA) had to make just 3 saves in earning the win.  Lancer net minder Lyndsey Nunes (W. Springfield, MA) stopped 9 Bear shots before giving way half way through the second half.
