April 28, 2007

#2 Worcester State Advances Past #3 Castleton State, 16-6

Worcester, MA – The second seeded Worcester State College Lancer women’s lacrosse team advanced to their second straight New England Women’s Lacrosse Alliance final by defeating the third seeded Spartans of Castleton State College Saturday afternoon in Coughlin Field by the final tally of, 16-6.  The Lancers will now head to Western New England College next Saturday to take on the defending champion and top seeded Golden Bears.  The Lancers fell to WNEC, 13-7, during the regular season match.  The win is Worcester State’s 11th of the year adding to their record breaking total.  Castleton concludes their season at, 6-6.

Worcester State’s Ann Clark (Worcester, MA), just named the NEWLA Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, got the Lancers on the board 25 seconds in the game taking as assist from freshman Kim Vail (W. Newbury, MA).  Castleton State evened the score at 24:35 when freshman Stephanie Pearce (Shoreham, NY)  found the back of the net on a free position shot.  Worcester State then proceeded to run off five straight goals to take a commanding, 6-1, lead with 6:03 remaining.  Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA), Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, MA), Kim Cosenza (Fitchburg, MA) Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) and Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) all tallied scores in the run for the Lancers.  Pearce scored her second of the game to cut the lead to, 6-2, but Worcester State closed out the half with a 3-0 run with Clark scoring a pair and Rosborough netting her second of the game to set the score at, 9-2, at the half.

The Lancers continued to control the action in the second half opening with a 3-0 flurry with Clark scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the game along with sophomore Meredith Godfroy (Tyngsboro, MA) finding the back of the net for a, 12-2, advantage.

After Pearce’s third goal of the game for Castleton State, Clark scored her sixth of the game which gave her 300 career goals.  Only three other players in the history of NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse have ever reached that milestone.  Clark is third all time in goals scored and seventh in total points.

The two teams would match each other the rest of the way with both teams scoring three goals for the, 16-6, final score.

Clark led all scorers with 7 goals and an assist.  Feeley, Godfroy and Rosborough each chipped in with a pair of goals.  Pearce’s hat trick paced the Spartans.
