Ice Hockey Loses To Suffolk, 8-4

FITCHBURG, Mass. –  Suffolk University got three goals and an assist from Tim Dancey (Anaheim, CA/Bershire School) to win the consolation game of the UBS Classic, 8-3, over Worcester State College Saturday afternoon at Landry Arena on the campus of Fitchburg State College.

The Lancers capitalized early in the first on a power play goal by Billy O’Neill (Wayne, PA/Valley Forge Minutemen). O’Neill tapped in a rebound from a Mark Rintel (Queens, NY/Santa Fe Roadrunners) deke attempt. Justin Brownstein (Wyncote, PA/Valley Forge Minutemen) also assisted on the goal that gave the Lancers a 1-0 lead just 2:24 into the contest.

Suffolk answered right back, tying the game at 1-1 four minutes later when Dancey fired a shot that broke off the goaltender and found the back of the net. Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala) and Dan Pencinger (Randolph, NJ/Trinity-Pawling) added the assists.

The Rams then took a 2-1 lead on Dancey’s second goal of the contest, this time on the power play set up by Pencinger and John Rocchio (East Greenwich, RI/Bridgewater Bandits) with 3:16 to play in the first.

The teams traded goals to open the middle stanza as WSC tied the game at 2-2 3:41 into the period on O’Neill’s second of the afternoon with assists going to John Coffey (Pascoag, RI/Kents Hill) and Michael Smith (Bourne, MA/Bourne).

However, Dancey and Suffolk struck back 15 seconds later for a 3-2 Suffolk advantage when Dancey tied the UBS record for goals in a game with his third assisted by Ryan Collins (Amesbury, MA/Laconia Leafs). Dancey finished his day with a UBS record-tying three goals and an assist.

The Rams used the momentum of that goal to open up a 6-2 cushion after Cook, Rocchio and Bill Galvin (Canton, MA/Hebron Academy) scored three goals over a 1:45 span.

Rocchio added his second of the game with 6:10 remaining in the second to make it a 7-2 cushion assisted by Pencinger and Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, CA/Lawrence).

John Bucci (Sellersville, PA/Wyoming Seminary) got Worcester back on track to make it a 7-3 game on a goal assisted by O’Neill at 6:45 of the third period. Pencinger, who finished with a goal and three helpers, answered right back for Suffolk with a shorthanded tally at 9:35 of the third assisted by Sabo.

Worcester rounded out the scoring with a Brownstein shorthanded goal assisted by Bucci at 18:16 of the third.

Worcester State goaltender Jason Richardson (Perkasie, PA/Wyoming Seminary) had 33 saves in two-plus periods of action. He was relieved by David Schultz (North Andover, MA/Laconia Leafs) who turned away 23 shots. Suffolk netminder Jeff Rose (Collinsville, CT/Valley) made 26 stops in the win.
