GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Caitlin Albert
(Scarborough, Maine) scored two goals to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-2 win over
the Worcester State College Lancers in Little East
Conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at
Paula Hodgdon Field on the Gorham campus.
The win improves Southern
Maine’s overall record to 6-3 and keeps the Huskies
undefeated in the LEC at 4-0. The loss drops the Lancers
to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the LEC.
With the score tied at
1-1 just under 12 minutes into the game, Southern Maine
used back-to-back goals from junior forward Alyssa
Kraus (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Albert to
surge ahead of the Lancers 3-1. Kraus put Southern Maine
ahead for good 11:39 into the game on an assist from
freshman midfielder Jennifer Masessa (Montville,
Maine/Mount View) and was quickly followed by Albert,
who tallied her first goal of the season 21 seconds
later on an assist from freshman forward Sara
Winterbottom (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills).
Worcester State cut the
Southern Maine lead to one on senior midfielder Kara
Walker’s (Tempteton, Mass./Narragansett) second goal
of the game in the 23rd minute. Walker redirected a long
pass from junior forward Megan Rosborough
(Uxbridge, Mass.) to notch her team-leading fifth goal
of the season.
Southern Maine regained
its two-goal advantage in the 32nd minute on Albert’s
second goal of the game. Junior defender Missy Rivet
(Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) set up the scoring chance
for Albert, corralling a ball out of the air and tapping
it forward to Albert who was positioned in front of the
cage. USM tacked on its final goal of the game in the
second half when sophomore forward India Lowe
(Gloucester, Mass.) connected on her eighth goal of the
season in the 46th minute.
USM sophomore goalkeeper
Allie Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) earned the win
allowing two goals and making two saves in 56 minutes of
action before freshman Courtney Howe (Pittsfield,
Maine/Maine Central Institute) finished the game. Howe
made one save. Worcester State senior goalkeeper Erin
MacDonald (Dedham, Mass) played well in goal making
10 saves.
Southern Maine returns to
action on the road Saturday (Sept. 29) at Westfield
State College for a 3:30 p.m. LEC match up. Worcester
State travels to conference opponent Bridgewater State
on the same date at 11 a.m.
