Springfield, MA – The
Springfield College field hockey team defeated Worcester
State, 2-0, this afternoon in the championship game of the
Zenaty Invitational, hosted by Springfield College on newly
renamed and newly resurfaced Stagg Field (formerly known as
Benedum Field).
In the consolation game played this morning,
Rensselaer defeated Western New England College, 4-0.
With the win, Springfield is now 2-0 on the young
season, while Worcester State falls to 1-1. With its win,
RPI is 1-1, while WNEC falls to 0-2.
The tourney is named for Dottie Potter Zenaty,
head field hockey coach at Springfield College for a 34-year
period. With 377 victories, she is the winningest coach in
New England college field hockey history.

Association Division III preseason poll, Springfield wasted
no time in getting on the board when junior forward Jane
Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) scored just 41 seconds into the
match.
Although the Pride dominated play, that lone goal
stood up through the first half, and well into the second.
Then with just 8:10 left in the game, freshman midfielder
Meghan Bradley (Cumberland, R.I.) found the back of the net,
putting Springfield up by two goals.
Springfield out-shot Worcester State, 32-3. For
the Pride, senior goalkeepers Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield,
Conn.) and Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H.) split time, each
playing a half. Kaplan made one first half save, Kincade two
second half saves. For Worcester State, senior Erin
MacDonald (Dedham, Mass.) played a stellar game with 30
saves.
In the consolation game, Rensselaer scored twice
in the first half en route to its 4-0 victory. The first
goal was scored unassisted by senior midfielder Michelle Roy
(Rensselaer, N.Y.) with 12 minutes left in the half. That
goal was followed by a tally from sophomore forward Shaina
Feldman (Phoenixville, Penn.) with 8:55 left in the first
stanza. That goal was assisted by junior forward Lisa Pak
(Methuen, Mass.).
In the second half, freshman forward Sandy
Turnbull (Upperville, Va.) scored an unassisted goal with
26:16 left. Finally, with 14:00 left, senior defender Sarah
Merlin (Sharon, Mass.) scored, assisted by Turnbull.
The Red Hawks easily out-shot the Golden Bears,
34-9. For WNEC, senior goalkeeper Emilie Donka (White River
Junction, Vt.) was credited with 26 saves. For RPI, freshman
keeper Lauren Fernandes (Orange, Ohio) had five saves.
There were five players chosen on the All-Tournament
Team. They were:
