Field Hockey
Earns Shutout Victory Over WPI, 4-0
Worcester, MA
– The Worcester State College field hockey team won their
third straight game to improve to 5-2 on the season as they
shutout the visiting Engineers of WPI Tuesday evening at
Coughlin Field by the final score of 4-0. The Lancers
avenged last year’s defeat at the hands of WPI by the
identical score. The loss drops the Engineers to, 4-3, on
the season.
Worcester State freshman Angela Johnson
(Ashby, MA) scored the game-winner less than six minutes
into the contest with an assist credited to Jillian
Tamburro (Marlboro, MA). The goal was Johnson’s team
leading third on the season. WPI had a great chance to even
the score with less than five minutes remaining in the first
half when a Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) shot was
saved by Tamburro right in front of the Lancer net.
After the teams went to the break with the
Lancers still holding the, 1-0, lead, junior Kate Fisher
(Greenfield, MA) gave Worcester State an insurance goal
converting a penalty stroke with 29:14 remaining in the
match.
Senior co-captain Kara Walker (Templeton,
MA) added Worcester State’s third goal with 19:08
remaining on a pass from freshman Meghan Feehan (Lunenberg,
MA). Senior Colleen Flynn (Arlington, MA)
rounded out the scoring on the night tallying an unassisted
goal with 7:29 left in the game.
Lancer net minder Erin MacDonald (Dedham,
MA) made 5 saves on the night while her counterpart
Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) stopped 4 shots for WPI.
Worcester State will return to action on
Saturday when they host the Rams of Framingham State in a
Little East and MASCAC match up. WPI will travel to Nichols
College on Thursday to take on the Bison.
