Field Hockey Knocks Off Fitchburg in OT, 2-1

Worcester, MA – Worcester State forward Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, MA) raced the length of the field on a break away and fed co-captain Kara Walker (Templeton, MA) who was streaking down the middle for the  game-wining goal with just 1:09 remaining in overtime to lift the host Lancers of Worcester State College to a, 2-1, win over Little East opponent Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.  The victory improves the Lancers to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Little East action, while Fitchburg falls to 1-3 and 0-2 in Little East Conference play.

Blais got Worcester State on the board with 26:09 remaining in the first half when she collected a rebound of her own shot and beat the Falcon keeper who made a beautiful stop on the initial offering.  After a scoreless remainder of the half, Worcester State took the, 1-0, lead into the break.

The Falcons stormed out of the gate in the opening minute of the second half as junior Heather DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, MA) evened the score at, 1-1, off a feed from sophomore Vanessa Truax (Foxboro, MA) less than a minute into second half action.

The score remained, 1-1, through regulation as Falcon net minder Emily Creen (Worcester, MA) had a strong day making 8 saves in the contest as Worcester State out shot the Falcons 18-6 and 11-2 in shots on goal.

Worcester State had numerous opportunities in overtime but the game-winner came as a result of Fitchburg’s best offensive chance.  After a Falcon turnover, Blais broke down the right side of the field before sending a pass to the middle of the field to a wide open Walker for the game-winner.

Worcester State goalkeeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA) made 2 saves on the day for Worcester State as she improved to 4-2 on the year.

The Lancers will host cross-town rival WPI on Tuesday afternoon while Fitchburg State will return to action on Thursday when they host Regis College.
