WORCESTER, MASS. – Kate Fisher’s
(Greenfield, Mass.) penalty stroke goal with 3:24 remaining
in regulation lifted the Worcester State College field
hockey team to a 2-1 come-from-behind non-conference victory
over Clark University at Granger Field on Thursday night.
Clark drops to 2-2, while
Worcester State improves to 3-2 overall.
Worcester State had the better of
the chances in the first half – a 9-6 margin in shots and
7-2 edge in penalty corners, but it was Clark that scored
first. Junior Madeleine Henefield (Pelham, Mass.) received
a feed from Kate Willis (Lincoln, R.I.) and deposited the
ball in the cage for her third goal of the season in the
23rd minute.
Worcester State had
an opportunity to get on the board with just over three
minutes left in the half, but a pair of nice saves by
Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) prevented the
equalizer.
Clark went into the
break with a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers evened
the contest at one apiece with a goal from Angela Johnson
(Ashby, Mass.) just under seven minutes into the second
frame. Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, Mass.) was credited with an
assist on the play.
Clark’s best scoring
chance came off a bullet from Chelsea Proulx (Franklin, N.H.)
at the 43:30 mark. The shot rolled towards the left post
before it was swiped out by WSC goalie Erin MacDonald
(Dedham, Mass.).
The game remained tied until an
intentional foul in the circle was called on Clark and
Fisher was awarded a penalty stroke. The junior midfielder
lined the ball to the right of the cage for the game-winner
and her first goal of the season.
Dawsey had another strong day in
goal with 13 saves for Clark. MacDonald turned aside three
shots for Worcester State.
Clark is back in action against
Regis College on Tuesday (7 p.m.). Worcester State will host
Fitchburg State College on Saturday (11 a.m.).
