Worcester, MA
– The Worcester State College Lancer field hockey team
earned the final playoff spot in the upcoming Little East
Conference playoffs by virtue of their, 4-0, win over the
visiting Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University
Saturday afternoon on senior day at Coughlin Field. The win
by Worcester State places them in a mathematical tie with
Eastern Connecticut at 4-7 in the conference but the Lancers
win the tiebreaker due to the head to head victory.
After a scoreless first half, the Lancers got
on the board when senior Kara Walker (Templeton, MA)
tipped home a pass from junior Jill Tamburro (Marlboro,
MA) to give Worcester State a, 1-0, lead with 23:49
remaining in the contest. The goal was Walker’s team
leading eighth of the season
Walker struck again for her ninth of the year
and second tally of the day when freshman Angela Johnson
(Ashby, MA) made a beautiful pass to a wide open Walker
with 17:02 remaining in the game.
Walker and Johnson were at it again with 2:53
remaining with Johnson getting her 8th goal of
the season assisted by Walker to give Worcester State the,
3-0, lead.
Worcester State closed out the scoring with
no time on the clock when Kate Fisher (Greenfield, MA)
scored off a pass from freshman Meghan Feehan (Lunenburg,
MA) during a penalty corner for the, 4-0, final.
Worcester State goaltender Stacie Moore
(Shrewsbury, MA) made 6 saves on the afternoon in
earning her second straight shutout. Eastern Connecticut
net minder Tia Mucciarone (Franklin, MA) stopped 6
shot sin the loss.
Worcester State will travel to the top seeded
Keene State Owls on Tuesday in the Little East
quarterfinals. Eastern Connecticut closes out their season
with a final record of 6-12.
