DANBURY, CT
— The Worcester State College field hockey team kept
its Little East Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 2-0
victory over Western Connecticut State University on
Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Meghan Feehan (Lunenburg, MA) put the Lancers up 1-0
with her first collegiate goal off an assist from Kim
Cosenza (Fitchburg, MA) in the 55th minute of play.
Worcester State added an insurance goal with 36 seconds left
in the contest when Angela Johnson (Ashby, MA) eluded
the WestConn defense and challenged Sandra Vermeulen
(Riverdale, NJ) one-on-one and netted the break-away
goal. It was Johnson's sixth goal of the season.
Vermeulen made eight saves for the Colonials
while Erin McDonald (Dedham, MA) turned away three
shots for the Lancers.
The Lancers improve to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in the league,
good enough for a virtual four-way tie for seventh place
going into the final two weekends of the regular season.
WestConn drops to 4-10 overall and, along with Framingham
State College and Westfield State College, still has a share
a piece of seventh place at 3-6,. The Colonials defeated
FSC, 1-0 back on October 2 and have the Owls for their
season finale next Friday night in Westfield, Mass. That
game could determine which team makes the field of eight for
the LEC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, October 30.
WestConn visits Salem State College on Saturday, October 20
at 1 p.m. It closes out the regular season at Westfield
State College on Friday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
