Worcester State Defeats Anna Maria in Opener, 3-0
Worcester, MA
- The Worcester State College Lancers field hockey team opened their
2006 campaign with a, 3-0, win over the visiting Amcats of Anna
Maria College Tuesday night on the turf of John Coughlin Stadium.
The win was the first for head coach Reneé LaValley as well as
junior goalkeeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA). Anna Maria
evens their record at 1-1 having opened their season with a win over
Becker College this weekend.
The
Lancers got the game winner with 17:20 remaining in the first half
on a rebound shot by sophomore Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, MA)
notching her first collegiate goal. The Lancers took the, 1-0, lead
into the break. Worcester State out shot the Amcats, 8-2 in the
half.
Just
over 5 minutes in the second frame, sophomore Kim Cosenza
(Fitchburg, MA) blasted home a pass from junior Kara Walker
(Templeton, MA) to give Worcester State a, 2-0, edge.
Worcester State closed out the scoring with 9:05 remaining when
senior co-captain Jennifer Lyons (Norwood, MA) crushed a shot
past the Anna Maria keeper to give the Lancers the, 3-0, decision.
MacDonald made 3 saves in net posting the shutout for the Lancers,
while Anna Maria keeper Rachael Braier (Saugus, MA) was
outstanding in net stopping 14 shots. For the contest, Worcester
State put 17 shots on net to Anna Maria’s 3.
Next
up for Worcester State is their Little East Conference opener at
Eastern Connecticut on Saturday while Anna Maria hosts Wheelock on
Thursday.
