Worcester State Defeats Salem State, 4-1
Worcester, MA
- The Worcester State College Lancers field hockey
team improved to 5-1 overall and undefeated at 2-0
in Little East action as they defeated the visiting
Lady Vikings of Salem State College, 4-1, Saturday
morning on the turf of John Coughlin Field. Salem
State falls to 1-3 (1-2 Little East).
Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, MA)
gave the Lancers a, 1-0, lead just 3:30 into the game when she
buried a feed from sophomore Kim Cosenza (Fitchburg, MA).
That lead stood until halftime despite the Lancers out shooting the
Lady Vikings, 7-3, in the half.
With
15:42 remaining Worcester State scored the clincher when Cosenza
finished off a pass from senior co-captain Jennifer Lyons
(Norwood, MA). But Salem State answered back 32 seconds later
as Kristen Bartlett (Danvers, MA) converted an assist from
junior Alyson Slaven (Danvers, MA) to trim the lead back to a
goal.
Lyons
gave the Lancers some much needed breathing room scoring Worcester
State’s third goal of the game with the assist going to junior
Kara Walker (Templeton, MA). Ann Clark (Worcester, MA)
finished out the scoring getting together with junior Kalie
Clayton (Fitchburg, MA) for the, 4-1, final.
Goaltender Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA) made 7 saves for
Worcester State. Salem State starter Nikki Lagatolla (Milford,
MA) stopped 11 shots for the Lady Vikings.
Worcester State will nest take to the field on Wednesday when they
travel to Bridgewater State College. Salem State will visit
Endicott on Monday.
