Worcester State Defeats Salem State, 4-1

Worcester, MA
- The Worcester State College Lancers field hockey team improved to 5-1 overall and undefeated at 2-0 in Little East action as they defeated the visiting Lady Vikings of Salem State College, 4-1, Saturday morning on the turf of John Coughlin Field.  Salem State falls to 1-3 (1-2 Little East).

Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, MA) gave the Lancers a, 1-0, lead just 3:30 into the game when she buried a feed from sophomore Kim Cosenza (Fitchburg, MA).  That lead stood until halftime despite the Lancers out shooting the Lady Vikings, 7-3, in the half.

With 15:42 remaining Worcester State scored the clincher when Cosenza finished off a pass from senior co-captain Jennifer Lyons (Norwood, MA).  But Salem State answered back 32 seconds later as Kristen Bartlett (Danvers, MA) converted an assist from junior Alyson Slaven (Danvers, MA) to trim the lead back to a goal.

Lyons gave the Lancers some much needed breathing room scoring Worcester State’s third goal of the game with the assist going to junior Kara Walker (Templeton, MA).  Ann Clark (Worcester, MA) finished out the scoring getting together with junior Kalie Clayton (Fitchburg, MA) for the, 4-1, final.

Goaltender Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA) made 7 saves for Worcester State.  Salem State starter Nikki Lagatolla (Milford, MA) stopped 11 shots for the Lady Vikings.

Worcester State will nest take to the field on Wednesday when they travel to Bridgewater State College.  Salem State will visit Endicott on Monday.
