Worcester State Defeats Simmons
College in Strokes

- The Worcester State College Lancers and Simmons College Sharks
played 100 minutes of field hockey before Worcester State prevailed
in penalty strokes (3-2) Thursday evening at Worcester State’s
Coughlin Field. The win improves Worcester State to 4-1 on the
season while Simmons remains winless at 0-6 having lost for the 4th
time in overtime this season.
Worcester State found themselves down 2-0 at the break after senior
forward Kim Lindsey (Mattapan, MA) opened the scoring just
3:23 into the contest on a shot across the cage and followed by an
Elizabeth Hennigan (Worcester, MA) tally with just 2 seconds
left in the half for Simmons.
The
Lancers picked up the pace of play in the second half out shooting
the Sharks 12-0 in the second frame. Senior forward Ann Clark
(Worcester, MA) cut the deficit in half 12:07 into the second
half cleaning up a deflected cross across the mouth of the cage.
Sophomore Kate Fisher (Greenfield, MA) tallied the game tying
score with just 3:08 remaining in regulation off of a penalty
corner.
In the
extra sessions, Simmons carried much of the 7 on 7 action
maintaining possession in their offensive half for long portions of
the overtimes but no one was able to break the deadlock after 30
minutes.
In
strokes, Clark, Christina Goudas (Uxbridge, MA) and senior
Jennifer Lyons (Norwood, MA) all made their shots with Lyons
proving to be the difference maker for Worcester State. Emily
Webb (E. Falmouth, MA) and Hennigan scored for the Sharks.
On the
night Worcester State keeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA) made
a pair of saves, while Simmons net minder Becky Slatkin (Paxton,
MA) stopped 8 Lancer shots.
Worcester State will return to Little East action on Saturday when
they host the Salem State Lady Vikings. Simmons will host Elms
College in a NAC match up.
