- The 4th seeded Worcester State College Lancers
field hockey team posted 5 first half goals and cruised to
an, 8-1, win over the 5th seeded Bears of
Bridgewater State College in Little East quarterfinal action
Tuesday evening at Worcester State’s Coughlin Field.
Worcester State advances to the Little East semifinals
against the top seeded Keene State College Owls who defeated
Salem State College, 1-0, Tuesday night.
The Lancers got on the board in the 7th
minute when Worcester State’s leading scorer Ann Clark
(Worcester, MA) potted her 15th goal of the
year off of a pass from sophomore Megan Rosborough
(Uxbridge, MA.) Senior Mary Lemelin (Colrain, MA)
followed that score less than two minutes later with her
first goal of the season to give the Lancers a, 2-0, lead
and all the scoring that they would need.
Junior Colleen Flynn (Arlington, MA) scored her 7th
of the year in the 19th minute off a feed from
sophomore Ginelle Blais (Marlboro, MA) to further
extend the Lancer lead. Junior Kara Walker (Templeton,
MA) then rounded out the scoring for Worcester State in
the half scoring her 3rd and 4th goals
of the season to give the Lancers a, 5-0, advantage at the
break.
Blais scored the 6th Worcester
State goal just 44 seconds into the second half followed by
Clark’s second tally of the night off a pass from Kim
Cosenza (Fitchburg, MA) for a, 7-0, Worcester State
lead.
Bridgewater State got on the board in the 46th
minute when senior midfielder Lindsay Dopart (Somerset,
MA) scored her 9th goal of the season on an
assist by forward Katie Balboni
(Townsend, MA.)
Megan Rosborough then closed out the scoring
on the night with her 4th of the season giving
Worcester State the, 8-1, victory.
Worcester State net minder Erin MacDonald
(Dedham, MA) made 8 saves before giving way to backup
Hilary Pineo (Gardner, MA).
Worcester
State now has a 13-6 overall record while Bridgewater State
closes out their season with a final mark of, 8-10.
